Abstract
What elements need to be in place to provide maximum harmony for the declaration and expansion of a collaborative climate?
If a video was made but no one watched it, would it make a sound? A video has a different purpose than a falling tree. Its purpose is to communicate. Online video hosting platforms are user friendly and user generated forums such as YouTube and Vimeo and they have developed a distinct paradigm shift in production, distribution and consumption patterns.
To get a sense of the characteristics behind video sharing platforms it is useful to analyze the structural parameters they set in place and clarify the types of behaviors that those very parameters encourage. It is useful to look at established ecologically to discern patterns and design more engaging collaborative ecosystems.
For a long time media designers got their design cues from previous media design because they felt limited by technology or pressured to conform to design trends. But now that software design and technology have become powerfully versatile, anything is imaginable. We think collaborative environment designers may be able to make a better designed and more harmonious environments for if they think about what a well designed collaborative environment feels like in real space i.e. bazar, theme parks, stadiums.
We collaborated online using Google Hangout, twitter, WeVideo and even Second Life. Inspired by Henry Jenkins, Jean Burgess and Gilles Deluze’s words on Rhizomes and other perspectives we qualified the interactions that took place, by identifying all the involved players, evaluating their behaviors and analyzing the legal dynamics that set the parameters for those interactions to take place.
